Ryerson is also one of the most consistent players at Dortmund this season. Week after week, he gives good performances. He is at 28 and is experienced as well as physically reliable. This balance has turned him into a major figure in the squad.
Barcelo had been keeping a close track on him. The full-back positions are one of the areas that the club is seeking to reinforce before the new season. They have a high priority of a reliable and tactically adaptable defender. Ryerson fitted that description quite well.
His greatest strength is that he is versatile. He is able to work both on the right and left sides of defence. That flexibility is paramount in the contemporary football. It also gives managers the opportunity to move players and manipulate systems without structure being lost.
In the case with Hansi Flick, Ryerson would have provided a pragmatic proposal. He would have relieved the pressure of other players such as Jules Kounde. He also introduces discipline and positional awareness, which Barcelona greatly appreciates at the moment.
Dortmund however look at things differently. Ryerson has a contract that runs up to 2028. He is also among the top players in terms of minutes this season. On the inside, he is considered as being vital to the club sporting project.
Autonomously of figures, Dortmund admire his mentality. Ryerson is devoted, professional and perfectly oriented towards long-term plans of the team. That is why it is hard to replace him.
Due to this reason Dortmund cannot be negotiated with. No price tag has been set. No talks are expected.
In the case of Barcelona, it is a blowback. The club will now be forced to seek other alternatives in the market. Some defensive reinforcement is still needed, but Ryerson will not be among them.
