Women’s Nations League: Spain Advance Past England

Claudia Pina scored twice off the bench as Spain beat England 2-1 in Group 3 on Tuesday to advance to the last four of the Nations League.

Spain and England, world and European champions, decided their group after Germany and France won Groups 1 and 2. Sweden and Denmark played a winner-takes-all match in Stockholm 30 minutes later. Spain pressed England from the start, with striker Esther Gonzalez forcing Hannah Hampton into a great one-handed reflex stop, but Alessio Russo gave the visitors the lead in the 22nd minute with a fine finish against the run of play.

The hosts had plenty of possession but few dangerous chances. In the 58th minute, Pina joined the game and equalized less than two minutes later by shooting across Hampton and into the net as England lost possession when playing out from the back.

Pina, 23, scored 10 minutes later with a stunning dipping attempt that left Hampton useless to secure her spot in Euro 2025, which begins in a month. The result gave Spain 15 points from six games, five ahead of England.

Sweden looked destined to join Spain in the final four after they took a 3-0 lead in 11 minutes of their home match with Denmark and were 5-1 up by the hour.
