The Algeria vs Jordan World Cup encounter in Group J produced a decisive second-half turnaround as Algeria secured a 2-1 victory over Jordan at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on Monday, strengthening their position in the standings and ending Jordan’s tournament hopes.
Jordan began the game with a sense of urgency and took advantage of a fast break in the 36th minute after a defensive breakdown from Algeria, allowing Nizar Al-Rashdan to score from a close range. The finish in the bottom corner put Jordan up 1-0 half-time but they only had the lead for a short time.
Algeria broke the deadlock, however, in the build up of the second half, they started to ramp up the attack and put pressure on the Jordanian defence. The equaliser came in the 69th minute when the build-up play had been met with great effort and Nadhir Benbouali converted, making the result level.
Algeria did not give up in the 82nd minute when Amine Gouiri struck it lucky to make the comeback for all 3 points. The goal was a pivotal moment in Algeria’s Group J campaign, and the side moved into third place in the table. It is also significant for the Algerian side, for the first time in their World Cup history, they have won a game after conceding the first goal, which is a sign of their game management and second half resilience.
However, Jordan’s efforts to rally were not successful as they lost a second successive game in the group stage. The defeat also puts them out of the running for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even as they had made early World Cup efforts in both games.
Algeria’s win is also a testament to the importance of attacking prowess in knockout group stages, where late goals can alter the order of places and the route to victory. Group competition has become tight, and Algeria are mathematically and strategically still in contention, depending on the others’ results.
