Barcelo returned to the first place in LaLiga as they beat Levante 3-0 in Camp Nou. This was only one day after Real Madrid had lost way to a 2-1 loss to Osasuna. The team of Hansi Flick is one point ahead of the title race.
It was a fierce reaction of Barcelona against a dismal week. Atletico Madrid beat them 4-0 in the first leg of the semi-final of the Copa del Rey. After that, they lost to Girona 2-1 in the league. The twenty-five was mounting up, and the group came through at the right moment.
Marc Bernal scored the first goal of the first half after some clever build-up working by Joao Cancelo and Eric Garcia. This was followed by a goal by Frenkie de Jong just before the break which placed the Barcelona in total control. Levante had opportunities but could not make use of them because of low finishing.
Fermin Lopez was the one who gave a decisive blow with a shot of strength far to seal the victory at the end of the match. It was an ideal manner of concluding a confident performance.
The purpose of Bernal had an additional meaning. The 18 year old is just back after a long time out with injury on the knee which had sidelined him more than a year. He used some time after scoring to celebrate with his father and physiotherapist. It was the second goal of his comeback and an indication of increased confidence.
Flick confessed that the team had been on a bad times streak. He emphasized the fact that it is important to be at the top of the table but he did not forget that there is a long way to go.
In my view, this victory was personality-based. Also, Barcelo appeared to be concentrated and strong. Provided that they stick to this attitude, they will be the formidable competitors of the title.
