Jamie Carragher has also had his say about the club’s spending plans in the transfer window 2025, suggesting that if Liverpool’s costly signings do not pay off, then they could be regarded as one of the worst periods in the club’s Premier League history.
Around £450m ($614m) was invested in seven players at Liverpool following his victory with the Premier League under Arne Slot. The cost of this move amounted to a British record £125 million (roughly $171 million) for Alexander Isak and a potential £116 million (about $158 million) for Florian Wirtz.
The amount of money being spent has made it difficult for Liverpool’s new players to come into the game as most have not made much impact in their first season. The main exception was Hugo Ekitike as Liverpool finished fifth and then Slot was sacked.
Former defender Carragher had a crack at the club’s recruitment after Sunday’s 2-2 draw in Newcastle, and worried about the future effects of last summer’s spending. Isak and Wirtz were at it again, failing to make any mark in the game.
“This 12 months ago window is the first game of the season but my worry is it could put Liverpool back a year or two.”
He cautioned that the transfer window will be “very harsh” due to the costs associated with the transfer if the players are unable to improve in the coming months under new manager Andoni Iraola.
Carragher also raised doubts over the expectations he has had for Wirtz since his signing from Bayer Leverkusen for an enormous fee. The German midfielder was always going to be a promising creative force for Liverpool, but has not yet been able to pay off the investment regularly.
Liverpool’s signing will thus continue to be closely watched by Iraola as he looks to rebuild the side. The success or failure of Isak, Wirtz and the other big buys for the club may be the deciding factor in the £450m investment turning into a rebuild or a setback.
