Bosnia World Cup dreams were realised on Tuesday when the country team won a playoff shoot out against Italy in a dramatic fashion. It is also the second time in the history of the Balkan country that Bosnia will feature in the World Cup final.
Esmir Bajraktarevic, a teenager, became the hero, as he changed a decisive penalty after the famous goalkeeper of Italy Gianluigi Donnarumma. The triumph came as a shock to both fans and football experts, because Italy is a four times world cup champion and has a rich history. Not only did their victory give Bosnia a place in this year tournament which will be held in the U.S., Canada and Mexico but it also instilled great confidence in a country that is still struggling with political and social issues.
Festivities reigned in towns and cities. Jubilant crowds waving flags and light flares filled the streets, and long car processions with blaring horns kept on into the night. The triumph was a much-needed breath of happiness and solidarity among Bosnians who have gone through a painful phase of political segregation and outstanding ethnic hatred. Citizens made it clear that the success of the national team is a unifying icon of hope and pride.
Dentist Ida Pacarez-Kadric, in Sarajevo, commented on the emotional effect, saying, “We are ecstatic. This does not happen so often, and in the sea of gloom and issues that this country is going through, this is a light that will do us a lot of good and power.
The victory also emphasises on the rising pool of talents in Bosnia, as young stars such as Bajraktarevic demonstrate their ability to remain calm and composed in stress.
