Hugo Broos’ time in South Africa comes to an end as the Belgian coach opted to not extend his contract with Bafana Bafana, after a five-year association with the national team yielded significant success. The reasons for his resignation were officially confirmed by the South African Football Association (SAFA) on Friday.
The 74-year-old coach thanked Broos for his contribution to South African football, and will be leaving his post for good, said SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan. The move comes after a successful period with Broos at the helm of the national team since May 2021.
Broos then helped to rebuild Bafana Bafana and restore faith in the national outfit when he was head coach. His biggest success was on the African Cup of Nations in 2023, where South Africa finished third following an amazing campaign of the tournament.
The Belgian coach also took South Africa to a historic World Cup in 2026, as they advanced to the knockout stages for the first time in the nation’s history.
Broos’ focus was on bringing in a competitive team, enhancing his team’s defensive organisation and developing South African talent. His achievements brought a positive image to the football team of the country.
The exit is a consequence of stability and improvement under the tutelage of Broos, who was turned into one of the most successful foreign coaches in Bafana Bafana history. SAFA will now start the search for a new head coach to carry on the development of the team.
Broos will leave behind better performances, great success at major tournaments and reinvigorated faith from South African fans. His departure heralds a new chapter for Bafana Bafana as the federation anticipates future foreign matches.
