Manchester United lost in a very dramatic fashion to Newcastle United 2-1 at St James Park and a defeat that as Michael Carrick put it as the worst result of his managerial spells. The defeat terminated the seven game streak of the United team and questioned the team cohesion under the leadership of Carrick.
United seemed like they were about to go home with a point in spite of Newcastle going down to 10 men in the first half when Jacob Ramsey was shown a red card during a stoppage-time. The Red Devils had a large share of the game and were unable to turn possession into quality opportunities. Lapses and lack of sharpness in attack are ultimately costly to them. The climax was reached in the 90th-minute when Newcastle striker William Osula also became the goalscorer to win the match.
United players and travelling fans were shocked by the late strike because the team did not have an opportunity to react to it. Carrick acknowledged that the team lacked concentration and intensity that was needed in big matches. Even with glimpses of good play, United failed to make the most out of the numerical imbalance of Newcastle. Carrick addressed the necessity of reflection and learning out of such failures.
As he observed, although a loss in football is normal but performance should be handled instantly or it would be a stagnation in the premier league. As the season has now entered a critical phase, Manchester United has to pull itself together in time in order to be competitive.
Good performances in the next matches will be critical towards regaining trust and creating a consistency. The strength of the team, its strategic changes, and the management on the field will play a huge role in recuperating after this dismal performance.
