Andrey Santos has been highly regarded by Manchester City coach Enzo Maresca before the derby against Manchester United this Sunday, and the midfielder was part of the Manchester United summer signing haul. The city side want to maintain their perfect start to the Premier League campaign and consolidate their lead at the top of the table. But United have only netted three points in their first three league games.
The hosts also run the risk of suffering a fitness and preparation disadvantage after coming back into action in Europe on Thursday. The match came as no surprise as United comfortably dispatched Azerbaijani champions Sabah 4-0 in the victory and now have two days to rest before facing their own team at home.
Manchester City will come into the match with confidence, having impressed in the opening of the campaign. They will be aiming for their maiden win at Old Trafford for three years as well, making Sunday’s contest all the more important.
Though under pressure of United, Maresca gave a public thumbs up to manager Michael Carrick. His successor, the former United captain, took over from Ruben Amorim and made a decent start, but doubts have been raised about his future at the helm. The City coach also commended Carrick for dealing with a tricky situation and has suggested United are making further strides this season.
Carrick bolstered his midfield in the summer with the signing of Santos and Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba. Having spent time at Chelsea together, Maresca is well acquainted with Santos but the Brazilian made just nine appearances under the Italian.
Despite his absence, Maresca had much to say in praise of the United midfielder, not just his football skills but his character as well. He said Santos was courteous, modest and industrious, wishing him luck for the derby.
