The Gianluca Prestianni UEFA suspension has been confirmed with the Benfica winger banned for six matches for discrimination during a UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid. The ruling follows an investigation into events during the playoff game earlier this season. In its disciplinary report, UEFA found Prestianni guilty of using homophobic discriminatory language during the match that Madrid won 1-0 in the first leg. The dispute involved Real Madrid forward Vinícius Junior, and resulted in a tense moment on the field and a stoppage in play for approximately 11 minutes.
UEFA said the player will be serving an effective ban for the remaining two matches and the remaining three matches will be suspended for two years. This means any subsequent offence during this period could trigger the remainder of the ban. Prestianni was already serving a one-match provisional ban. UEFA highlighted its zero-tolerance approach to racism, reinforcing its efforts to promote respect and equality in European football. Footage of the game captured Prestianni repeatedly covering his mouth with his shirt before participating in a conversation that was deemed insulting by referees and players.
Vinicius Jr and other team players reportedly responded to the remarks on the pitch, further fuelling the altercation. This incident comes at a time when footballers’ behaviour and discrimination in professional sport, particularly in high-stakes Champions League fixtures, are in the spotlight. UEFA has previously cautioned teams and players about severe consequences for abusive and discriminatory remarks. The ban will likely affect Benfica’s squad for European matches and is a reminder of UEFA’s stance on discrimination.
