Sarina Wiegman contract news The England women’s head coach has agreed a two-year extension with the Football Association to the end of the 2029 European Championship, the club confirmed on Monday.
The 56-year-old Dutch coach has been hugely successful since his appointment with the Lionesses in September 2021, leading England to two victories at the European Championship in 2022 and 25. In addition, she guided her side to their first-ever Women’s World Cup final in 2023, where they went down to Spain.
Wiegman’s success is not limited to England. Prior to the Lionesses, she guided the Netherlands to a Euro 2017 victory and ended a five-year run of making the finals as a head coach in all major tournaments. Wiegman expressed joy over the announcement of her extended contract and her enthusiasm to continue working with the team and developing their potential.
“It’s just so fulfilling because I can continue to play with this team and what a better position is there in football than that?
But with the long-term commitment it is Wiegman’s job to get England to the next Women’s World Cup in Brazil as her priority, she said. England will face Ukraine in two legs later in November and December to secure a spot in next year’s tournament.
“My principal interest at the moment is of course the World Cup and getting them to qualify and prepare for the next big international campaign,” Wiegman said, to emphasise the importance of the World Cup for him.
The new deal will also include the 2027 Nations League, which will also be a qualification tournament for the women’s football event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The extension follows a previous contract renewal that was agreed in January 2024 and will ensure continuity for England as they seek to achieve more success on the international stage.
