Why Was Kulusevski Dropped From Sweden Squad?

After coach Graham Potter announced his final 26-man squad, there have been significant rumours in the build-up to the tournament.Much has been said about the Sweden World Cup squad following Graham Potter’s announcement of his final 26-man list. The most shocking thing is that there is no Dejan Kulusevski; and Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres are in.

Kulusevski’s lack is primarily associated with fitness issues. The Tottenham striker has been out since he suffered an injury to his knee in May 2025. This extended dry spell proved challenging for him to come back to competition in good form for the tournament. Fit is important for a big competition such as World Cup.

Alexander Isak, on the other hand, was included because the coaching staff thought he was of such quality. He had a season hindered by injury at Liverpool but is still one of the most valuable attacking players in the Swedish ranks. He has played a limited amount of league games, and has potential, but hasn’t played enough to make his point.

This was very much reflected in Graham Potter’s remarks. He said it’s not easy to get over the injuries he suffered from the long haul. There are highs and lows to come for players. But when he’s able to get going at the right moment, Isak can be a game-changer.

Consistent performances earned Viktor Gyokeres his seat as well. His form could give Sweden another good attacking weapon on the wing.

It is also interesting to note the number of players from British clubs. Eleven players from the team are in the UK. It is a statement as to the influence that British football has on the Swedish national team’s success. Potter appears to be working on the players that can play now tactically. This call could help minimize risk throughout the tournament.

There’s been a clear strategy written in the squad, although Kulusevski was a big disappointment. With balance, fit and impact, Sweden are looking to make a balance at the right time.
