The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announce a mutual agreement to end Vladimir Petkovic’s contract as national team head coach despite the recent extension of his contract until 2028, Algeria Petkovic split has been confirmed.
Petkovic’s resignation follows his Algerian team’s exit to the FIFA World Cup knockout round where the Desert Foxes played in the expanded 48-team tournament. Algeria reached the Round of 32 after securing a spot in the top three third-placed teams in the group stage.
The team’s World Cup run was cut short after their first knockout round defeat, 2-0 loss to Switzerland. Algeria made headway under Petkovic, but the federation opted not to go in that direction following discussion with the coaching staff.
The Bosnian tactician was hired to lead Algeria in February 2024, after the federation had previously shown confidence in his ability to lead and recently extended his contract for a long-term period. But his new order ends his reign in an unexpected way.
The Algerian Football Federation said it had reached an agreement with Petkovic and his entire coaching staff that they would be terminated.
The new coach marks a new chapter for Algeria as a national team that is now preparing for the future after its presence at the World Cup. The Desert Foxes are one of the most recognisable footballers in Africa and the next manager will make a huge difference in terms of the competitive aspirations that the team has.
For Petkovic, it is a time of World Cup qualification and a return to the international tournament, but Algeria looks to the future for new leadership as it prepares for its next international competition.
