Center-back 33-year-old has made his senior debut in 2014, earning 86 caps for Germany. He was then to become a major pillar of the national team defence, playing in three World Cups and various European Championship tournaments.
Rudiger’s decision was confirmed in a post on Instagram, where he explained that he was giving himself time to think before making the decision to let go of international duty.
“Eventually, I felt I had to step out of the way of the young kids to make way for the future of the national team,” Rudiger wrote, “After a bit of thinking, it’s time for me to retire from the national team.”
The Real Madrid defender admitted that he did not win the biggest of international trophies as a Germany player. But he admitted his stint with the national team was a pivotal moment in his footballing career.
“This is a very special chapter and I’m going to be very blessed and I feel this is going to mould me for the rest of my life, although we haven’t won anything in the last few tournaments and had some really tough defeats, it was a lot of fun for me and I’m very happy how it turned out.”
Rudiger has competed in the 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cups, as well as several European Championships. He was a much-needed figure in the back line for a transition time Germany was going through with his physical presence, defense and leadership.
With him now gone, it’s an opportunity for Germany’s younger defenders to assume more responsibility for the upcoming international cycle. It comes as a turning point in Rudiger’s career as he now focuses 100% on his club career. Today at 33, he is leaving the international arena one of the most veteran defenders of his generation in Germany.
