Coventry City victory over Newcastle United marked a historic moment for Frank Lampard’s side, who climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone with a commanding 4-1 win on Monday.
Coventry were unbeaten in the top-flight game on the bounce-back from their four previous defeats, and succeeded for the first time in 127 years in winning back-to-back away matches in their first English top-flight game of the season. They had had a tough beginning in the Premier League and this was a real boost to their survival efforts.
Jack Rudoni got Coventry on the board early in the first half from the penalty spot, to add Coventry’s first ever home Premier League goal at the CBS Arena since they moved there in 2005. The breakthrough was the opening gambit in an outstanding display of activity as Lampard’s men went on the attack against Newcastle.
The hosts took the lead again in the second half when Guinean forward Sidiki Cherif added two more in succession. The home side took the lead back in the dying moments, but Newcastle defender Sven Botman briefly lifted spirits when he brought them level. Coventry took their lead back before Stephen Mfuni extended the lead with a late strike to make it 4-1. The goals saw the Sky Blues get all three points and improve to 14th place.
It was Coventry’s next step in a string of resurgent form since their first point of the season in a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest before the international break. The up-and-coming side is now back on their feet following their two defeats in the first two games.
Coventry were also coming off a long losing streak as they won their first match against Newcastle since 1999. This is the first time they’ve returned to the Premier League since 2001 and that’s why the victory was especially crucial for the club supporters.
