Emery Rejects Chelsea-Villa Special Relationship

Chelsea have finalised a deal for the signing of Aston Villa goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, and the American have entered the Blues fold on a three-year deal. Chelsea announced the deal on Sunday, though the club did not provide details of the terms of the deal. According to reports, the 33-year-old is being sold to Stamford Bridge for in the region of £7.5m ($10.15m).

Following his move to Chelsea, Martinez said he is prepared to help the team aim for greatness in big trophies, which is one of the main factors behind his decision.

“It is my desire to be successful here,” Martinez said in a statement. I’m a guy that will want to win with everything he does and he wants to bring that here at this football club because this football club wins titles.

Martinez’ tenure at Aston Villa comes to an end with the transfer. He was signed by Arsenal in 2020 and made 256 appearances in the Premier League, becoming one of the best goalkeepers in the league.

The Spaniard was a vital member of Villa’s triumphant previous season, assisting Unai Emery’s team to 14th place in the Premier League and Champions League qualification. Villa was also the winner of the Europa League.

His arrival at Chelsea will put him in the line of succession from Robert Sanchez. The Spaniard has been Chelsea’s number one since he moved to the club from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023, but his role has been hot under the hat after he allowed a number of goals on the opening-day victory against Fulham.

Martinez has also a lot of experience internationally. He was an integral part of Argentina’s 2021 and 2024 Copa América teams and has also helped his country secure a World Cup in 2022.

Chelsea will hope he can bring years of experience, leadership and proven capability to bolster their goalkeeping unit, as they aim to be successful at all levels of the game, both at home and in Europe.
