LAFC Icon Carlos Vela Announces Retirement

After a 19-year career, former Arsenal and Real Sociedad attacker Carlos Vela has retired.  Tuesday saw the 36-year-old announce it on social media. Arsenal’s youth academy produced Vela, who made his senior debut at Salamanca on loan. He played 29 Premier League games for Arsenal before joining Real Sociedad for seven years.

Known for his flexibility, Vela played striker, attacking midfielder, and winger. He played 72 times for Mexico, winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup twice.

“Throughout my career, I have experienced some very special moments, but the time has come to officially retire from professional football,” Vela said.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to share my career with all of you,” he said.

Vela joined Los Angeles FC in 2018 and helped the club succeed. He won the MLS Cup and US Open Cup with LAFC. Vela is the club’s all-time leader in goals, assists, and appearances, and his 34 goals in 2019 set a league record.

In a touching message, LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington remembered Vela.

“He is LAFC’s pulse, captain, and face. Thorrington called Carlos one of our club’s greatest players and leaders.
