Portugal Climbs To Fifth In FIFA Rankings

Portugal improved two points to fifth in the latest FIFA rankings, becoming the sole European team to move up from outside the top 10 after the most recent international window.

Portugal’s rise was the result of an impressive run in the UEFA Nations League, with each game they played in the league during the period being won. They beat Wales and Denmark, and added two wins to a record of two victories against Norway, giving them a stronger claim to being among the best teams in the world.

Spain have extended their lead over the chasing pack to maintain their lead at the top of the ranking table. The reigning world hosts had another successful international window as they beat England 3-2 and had two victories against Croatia and also a win against the Czech Republic.

Even with their last international win, Argentina have remained in second place. The Argentina captain was reported to be making his last appearance for his country, so on Tuesday, he defeated Benin 3-0. France are third and England fourth despite their loss to Spain.

In Portugal’s case, the rise was especially pronounced, as none of the teams in the top five finished higher on the last ranking list. This is the culmination of the European champions’ superb performance in the Nations League matches.

The only other team in the top 10 to move was Brazil, which fell one spot after suffering friendly defeats during the international break. Brazil and Morocco were the only side to drop from their top 10 as both suffered friendly defeats during the international break. The rest of the top 10 is made up of Belgium, the Netherlands and Mexico.
