In the International Friendlies at the City Ground on Tuesday, Senegal became the first African team to beat England in 22 attempts, 3-1. Senegal’s unbeaten streak to 24 games, while England’s setback was their first in four under new manager Thomas Tuchel.
England captain Harry Kane blamed their unexpected loss on their inability to gain momentum. He said they’ve lost aggression.
“Not good enough,” Kane remarked.
“We had moments, but with and without the ball, we’re not clicking or finding the timing. We’ve lost our aggression.”
Edouard Mendy, who had saved Anthony Gordon’s shot, put the ball into Kane’s path in the seventh minute to give England the lead. Hosts conceded first goal in 40th minute from Ismaila Sarr. A ball over the top was grabbed onto by Diarra, who shot past Dean Henderson in the 62nd minute.
Cheikh Sabaly scored deep into stoppage time to mark the African victory. Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly called winning Afcon ‘amazing’. This is amazing. “We made history tonight and at Afcon, which we’re not used to,” Koulibaly remarked. He stated that they want to keep going to show the world they have a good nation.
“We want to keep writing Senegal’s tale. We wanted to demonstrate our nation’s virtue.”
