On Saturday, Spain’s comeback was etched on to their record in a memorable Nations League match against England, when they beat the English 3-2 at Wembley in an entertaining match in the home of football.
It was the second win to prolong a run that had seen Spain go unbeaten at home in 38 games, the longest such streak for any European side. The other one was won by Luis de la Fuente’s side when they beat England in Euro 2024 final.
England had a shaky start, with Lamine Yamal getting a great break from Marc Guehi. Spain had several chances to score again but the English struggled to come back and take charge.
In the 36th minute Anthony Gordon tied the score off a flowing team move. 4 minutes later, Harry Kane would get a chance when Nico O’Reilly passed a cross towards the goal with Marc Cucurella running out to deflect it home.
The hosts looked set to put theirselves ahead early in the second half. Kane took a penalty, but missed. The loss of opportunity was swiftly meted out to England by Spain. Alex Baena came on as a substitute to even off the score before Mikel Oyarzabal did the rest and England failed to find a response in the final stages.
De la Fuente said Spain had dominated the match and was adamant that his players would have gone on fighting if England had built up a bigger lead. The victory kept Spain’s incredible run of form going while England were left to look back on another game where they couldn’t hold their best form for the entire 90 minutes.
After the game, Kane admitted that was an issue England had faced again, stating that they had good stretches of form but not maintaining it throughout the game.
