Why Did Chelsea Sign Jamie Gittens from Dortmund?

On Saturday, foreign media reported that Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund sealed a €65 million ($76.1m) deal for attacker Jamie Gittens. Dortmund rejected a £42m offer to sign Gittens before the first closed window on June 10, according to a report.

With both teams in the Club World Cup, the two clubs began talks in the US earlier this week, which have grown in momentum. The 20-year-old, Chelsea’s top target to replace Jadon Sancho, who returned to Manchester United after his loan term, is scheduled to have a physical.

Gittens cannot play for Chelsea at the Club World Cup because he is cup-tied after coming off the bench against Fluminense in the group stage. Only two players can be added to squads.

Chelsea’s fourth summer signing was Gittens, while forward Liam Delap, defender Mamadou Sarr, midfielder Dario Essugo, and midfielder Andrey Santos returned from loan at Strasbourg.

Chelsea is interested in signing Brighton forward João Pedro, with Newcastle also interested, to enhance their offensive capabilities.

Chelsea is interested in Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike and West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus.
