On Wednesday, Barcelona revealed that 18-year-old wonder Lamine Yamal will wear Lionel Messi’s number 10 shirt. Yamal won the shirt after scoring 18 goals and 25 assists in 55 appearances, helping Barcelona win La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.
Lamine signed a six-year contract with FC Barcelona after wearing number 19 previous season. At the end of the 2025–26 season, Yamal’s contract expired, but Barcelona quickly offered him a new contract until 2031.
On Wednesday, club president Joan Laporta gave him shirt number 10 in a special ceremony. The number 10 shirt is renowned because Messi wore it during his trophy-laden Barca career.
Messi won 34 titles with Barcelona and left as all-time leading scorer with 672 goals in 2020-21 owing to financial issues. Even though Diego Maradona and Ronaldinho wore shirt number 10, Lamine Yamal declared he wouldn’t be weighted down by it.
“Messi paved the way with the number 10, I will make mine,” he remarked.
